This beautiful male brown came off Ashalnd this past weekend trolling the channel with a large size Flicker Shad. The one pictured (large size in that color pattern) has treated me well and is a go to fall bait when the fish are deep. Ive caught quite a few pike on it in the past few years. This fish was out deep (25 ft) and had either already finished his spawning or did not spawn this year. People are picking up browns, coho, and steel head at the head of the Bay and off the Washburn shore now. So theres hope for a good run yet. You can see on the graph the numbers of fish I was marking in the channel. Id go over groups of fish like this that would last for up to 40 seconds. If youre trolling and not marking fish, move and try a different spot. If your marking them and not getting bit try different styles, types, and depths of running your baits until you figure out what they want to hit. One thing Ive found that holds fairly true is that if the waves are larger than 1.5 ft stick baits on the surface do not produce as well as mid range divers that get down 6-8 ft. I think all the wave action washes out the noise and sight of the shallow diving stick baits especially when the water is a bit muddy. If its glass calm, even when very muddy, Ive had fish come up and smash stick baits even coming up off the bottom in 20 feet. Brian W.
