This beautiful snail is a member of Plectostoma salpidomon and lives off the coast of Malaysia. These snails typically don’t grow longer than 3 mm. Unfortunately, a new report has concluded these beautiful tiny little guys—and 30 other species just like it in the Plectostoma genus— are on the verge of extinction. The report also describes 10 new species of these snails, though one of them (P. tenggekensis) is not expected to last until the end of the year. The snails feed on the vegetation that grows on the coastal limestone. Unfortunately, miners retrieving the stone that will end up being used as cement are causing irreparable habitat destruction.
