This book Wolf Hall is a marvel. Preceded by 6 pages of amazing testimonials, all resonant. One ( dots mine) to describe Wolf Hall as a historical novel is to call Moby Dick a book about fishing. ....Booker judges got it absolutely right... Mantel, an astonishing writer, a prose stylist who combines absolute precision with compelling sense of flow, ...marvellously subtle observer of character...casts a spell that makes us think long and hard about order, law and the workings of power. I do -- and would love to -- write, but this sets such a standard that to achieve even a faint shadow of it seems an impossible standard. Another: ...a compulsively readable narrative. Not a word is wasted. Every phrase tells: the arresting imagery stings and illuminates at once, the intricate constriction never misses a chance to dramatize. Catholics and Protestants alike hamstring politics, breed hatred, burn, torture, eviscerate, all in the name of God. I will decide later if indeed, in its way, it is a modern novel for our times. Certainly an interesting time to read it.
