This book is the first of its kind – an attempt to analyse and systematise the peace philosophy of SGI President Daisaku Ikeda. As we know, SGI President Ikeda has tirelessly campaigned for world peace for several decades now. In the course of his peace-building work, he has produced a voluminous amount of writings that includes essays, poetry and even fiction. There is the still-ongoing The New Human Revolution, and over 30 annual SGI Day Peace proposals. The author, Dr Olivier Urbain, has been the Director of the SGI-affiliated Toda Institute of Global Peace and Policy Research since 2008. He succeeded the institute’s founding director, the late Dr Majid Tehranian (Dr Tehranian passed away in December 2012 in the US). He was a former member of the academic staff at Soka University, Japan, and a member of the SGI. While this book can be challenging to digest, I feel that it is an invaluable contribution to those who want to understand the totality of SGI President Ikeda’s peace ideals and philosophy. One must praise the courage of Dr Urbain for taking up this project and devoting countless hours and painstaking effort to it. But without great challenge, how can we possibly grow to become great? Even for an avid reader like myself, this book is something that is way out of my comfort zone. I find that if anything, this book increases my appreciation and admiration for SGI President Ikeda’s life-long quest for peace.
