This bothers me, and not because of race. It bothers me because a man died when I dont think he needed to, and it bothers me more that it was at the hands of someone I trust to protect and serve. It bothers me because I was raised to be a strong believer in our justice system and I cant help but feel like there is at least enough evidence to go to trial. It bothers me most because I know police officers and military members and I have seen the video and I know in my heart the ones I know wouldnt have handled this situation the same way. I know they risk their life every day because they love their community and they genuinely care and they would never use a chokehold- or any deadly force unless it was absolutely necessary, unless lives were in imminent danger. I dont think anyone should say that this officer is guilty, because I believe in the judicial process. That decision should be up to a jury of his peers, not to me. And, I would hope they would only find him guilty if he was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. But I do believe it should go to trial so the process has a chance to work. Because I am not naive to the fact that not all officers are as ethical as the ones I love, and I want everyone held accountable for their actions. I dont want the great officers lumped in with the rare few who MIGHT be less than great, because that isnt fair either. And I certainly dont want the people in uniform I trust to keep me safe to become people who can take a life without an absolute immediate need. This is a human issue, and it bothers me.
