This brilliant image shows Dani Tribes-people in the Central Highlands of West Papua. They have a beautiful and magnificent culture which reflects their beautiful homeland. West Papua is made up of 250 such tribes, each with their own distinct language and culture that has evolved individually over the 60,000 years that Papuans have been living in what was known as Meganesia or Sahul (before the end of the last Ice Age when the sea level was low, New Guinea, Australia and Tasmania were joined as one continent.) But with Indonesia’s transmigration scheme, Papuan tribes, cultures and languages are being lost. They are being made a minority in their own land and their culture is being forced away by the Indonesian government which is constantly trying to stop traditional dress/songs/customs. West Papuan cultures are too precious to let die. Indonesia’s Genocide will never exterminate the Papuan spirit. They are MELANESIAN. Not Indonesian.
