This bronze medal was awarded to Paul Peel at the Paris Salon by the Société des Artistes Français for his painting “After the Bath” in 1890. In the 1880s, the artistic scene in Paris France was centred around its annual Salons. To place in a medal class or even to receive an honourable mention amongst thousands of submissions was seen as a high accomplishment. From 1883 until his untimely death in 1892, Paul Peel exhibited seven paintings at the Salon and won this third-class medal. The award received mention in the French press and considerable newspaper attention back home in Canada. As the only Canadian artist in the nineteenth century to win a Salon medal, Peel’s relative position at the apex of Canadian art circles was assured.
