This brought back memories. My children was along this age, when the wife asked nervously, if they would be alright, as she watched them walking down the road, hand in hand, to their grandmothers. I laughed and asked her if she saw the German Shepard three steps in front, in addition to the palomino gilding, three steps behind? She looked puzzled, in answer, I told her there was no force, on this earth, that would harm either child ,without first having killed, both body guards. The dog, remained a position on Grannys porch, the horse, at the house fence gate, all day when needed, waiting for their return home trip. This was a daily ritual for years. A function they each performed, faithfully, until death. If you ever wanted to see a humorous calamity, it was during baseball practice in the field, out front. The dog chased down all base hits, denying any player the ball, assuring the kids were never tagged out, the horse would attempt to take his turn, pitching, and after being denied possession of the ball, next would change teams by taking his turn at bat. When he reached over a child and grabbed the bat, with his teeth, there was no denying who had possession, since he would pick the child up, and shake them off. Yes, the wife learned quickly, she had faithful companions for her offspring, both loving and committed, to their charge. May they both rest in peace.
