This came to be my favorite Christmas Carol many years ago when a friend asked me to do him a favor. He gave me a call one Sunday evening in late November to accompany him to the First Baptist Church in St. Johns. When we arrived, he said the youth group there was preparing a mural to decorate the back of the stage for their Christmas celebration. The kids tasked with the job were having problems transferring the image of the Nativity scene from a Christmas card to a huge sheet of paper that would cover the entire back wall of the stage. My friend had told them I was the best artist Wyland School had ever seen, so with that lofty recommendation I proceeded to remove my shoes and sketch the picture from the card. While I was walking back and forth on the brown paper under the bright lights of the stage, kneeling to draw the figures on the card and the stars over the manger, a person on the piano who was practicing songs for the show began to play this song. It became my favorite carol after that experience. I like this version best. Merry Christmas to all.
