This came up in someone elses thread, so I thought Id go back through some of my notable short fiction and see whats what: Footprints white female main character; American. Outbound Polish male main character, Southeastern U.S. supporting black characters (married couple). Exanastasis Greek male main character, Greek-African wife (supporting.) Gemini 17 Black American male main character, Jewish Russian female supporting. Ray of Light Black American male main character, with daughter (supporting). The Chaplains Legacy American (ethnicity unknown) male MC, Copt non-white supporting character, plus insectoid aliens. The Exchange Officers American white male MC, American black female SC. The Flamingo Girl Hispanic male MC, hispanic female SC. The Curse of Sally Tincakes female (undetermined ethnicity) MC. IIRC a reviewer once accused me of politically correct tokenism. I shrugged at that. My stories tend to evolve organically and I go with what the kernels of the story suggest to me. Very rarely do I specifically make any one character non-white or non-male simply for the sake of having them be non-white, non-male. Usually, these characters are who they are (gender as well as ethnicity) because the situation itself suggests or requires it. Especially since I am writing (often) from my military background half the time, and the U.S. Army is hardly a white boy club. I suppose my marriage has something to do with it too. But I dont think Ive ever written a grievance story. Gemini 17 touches on the racism of the Cold War era of the 1960s without being *about* that racism per se. And thats perhaps as close as I get, in the grievance department.
