This church was formerly the German Moravian Church of Elizabeth, - TopicsExpress

This church was formerly the German Moravian Church of Elizabeth, organized in 1863, and first meeting in a room at Continental School 3. A church was erected in 1869 at the corner of Seventh and Marshall Streets. During World War I, the church erected this building on Lafayette St. at Reid St. The Moravian church traces its roots to the early 1400s in the Czech province of Moravia. The founder was John Hus, a Catholic priest and professor at the University of Prague, who held that the Bible is the authority in matters of faith and life. He spoke out against the sale of papal indulgences and was burned at the stake in 1415. The church went underground for years and reemerged in Germany in the early 1700s. Missions were established in Europe and America. More recently the Lafayette St. church was known as the Holy Temple of God In Christ. It is now for sale, along with the adjoining parish office, for $729,000. This is out of reach for most non-profit organizations. Great for builders-developers is mentioned in the real estate ad. I think we are going to see an apartment building here soon.
