This clip, from 1992, was part of a weekly FOX TV show I produced in the Reno area to promote my schools there, Just for Kicks. The young men in the first piece are Wes Wilson and Ryan McGill. Ryan, a 4th dan, visited me last night while I taught at Paul Castagnos school in Boston. He brought his gi --and 22 years later --showed the millions of kicks we did --over 1000s of hours of training, had not gone to waste; he still had the speed, power, and composure of a veteran black belt. More importantly, Ryan has his masters in foreign diplomacy, served as a diver in the Navy for 4 years, spent 8 years as helicopter pilot in the Marines, and is presently working in the non-profit world and intends to proceed in his career as an activist for military veterans. Hes working on his second masters degree --and is the forever gracious friend and student / teacher. I also had the good fortune to get a visit from my black belt Colleen Camenisch, who besides being a West Coast black belt and our front desk master for a decade, has her MBA and is a full-time teacher at the Center for Mindfulness in Boston. Bravo to these black belts who have so beautifully taken the work out of the dojo and into the world --and thank you my friends for lending value to the years we were fortunate enough to spend together.
