This comment was made by Concerned Citizens of Pickens County (CCPC). Again, I and others are blocked from responding on their page, so I’ll respond here. CCPC: At a meeting of the delegation back in December, Senator Larry Martin informed our school board, If you are trying to go somewhere, well help you get there. But you dont appear to be trying to go anywhere. Translation? Dont ask the state to do something youre not willing to do yourselves. Alex Saitta: I’m not exactly sure of the point CCPC is making here, but others have tried to twist Senator Martin’s words in all different ways so it looked like he was criticizing the board. CCPC is trying to echo that point, but did so quite ineffectively. Since this has been brought of a few times, let me explain who said what and what context. I was at the meeting where Senator Martin said, If you are trying to go somewhere, well help you get there. But you dont appear to be trying to go anywhere. Here is my take on this. First, he wasn’t talking to the school board as a whole, but responding to Trustee Judy Edwards. Judy was complaining to the Senator about legislation that limited the amount school boards in the state could raise property taxes each year. She was the only trustee complaining about it, mainly because she is the biggest advocate for higher property taxes on the school board. Looking back over the years, the school board tax increases have been less than that limit, so the Senator replied to Judy, If you are trying to go somewhere, well help you get there. But you dont appear to be trying to go anywhere Translation: Judy, there is no reason to increase the limit if the board hasnt been bumping up against the limit. CCPC and others seem to be using this quote to say Senator Martin opposes the school board or is against it. It was a narrow comment directed to Judy Edwards and her complaint. It doesn’t appear to me his comment was any broader than that. CCPC is short on the facts and supports higher taxes in all sorts of ways, so they spin and stretch all they can.
