This could be very bad indeed. It looks like the biggest volcano in Iceland, Bárðarbunga, is going to blow. If it blows under a glacier, which is possible (the volcano is 200km long; part of it rests under a huge glacier) then Iceland could see floods on the order of millions of cubic meters of water per *second*. 75% of their power comes from hydroelectricty, by the by. But this is by no means confined to Iceland. Beside the possible 21-30 cubic kilometers of lava, there are the vast clouds of lethal gas. When Bárðarbungas little brother Laki erupted in 1783, it discharged 120 million tons of sulphur dioxide and 10 million tons of hydrogen fluoride (aka, hydrofluoric acid) into the atmosphere, while choking the air up with so much dust that the Mississippi River froze all the way down to New Orleans. It was the most lethal eruption in recorded history, at 6 million people dead along with countless animals. And remember, thats the little brother. Seismologists in Iceland are saying that it *is* going to blow, and soon. Its possible that were going to get a small eruption from the big volcano. We can only hope so. If not, things are going to get very difficult very quickly.
