This day in 1830 saw the opening of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, the first railway to provide a scheduled passenger service. The opening day was pretty eventful - the MP for Liverpool fell under the wheels of Stephensons Rocket and was killed, and when the Duke of Wellington (the Prime Minister) arrived in Manchester, he was pelted with vegetables by a hostile crowd. The people in Manchester were described as A slovenly, ragged set, with hair uncombed and beards unshaven, with waistcoats open, exhibiting unwashed skin, dirty linen, and bare necks. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opening_of_the_Liverpool_and_Manchester_Railway
