This day in The Hatters Band history: 20 years ago, June 27, 1994. After a day off to travel 770 miles from Portland, Oregon, where The Hatters had opened for Collective Soul at La Luna on Saturday, the band once again opened for Collective Soul on Monday at Club DV8 in Salt Lake City, Utah a club venue directly across the street from the still-new Delta Center arena. Club DV8 was something of a go-go bar, with the stage in a corner of an upper floor and dance music playing on the lower floor. This gig was memorable (for me, that is) for the odd configuration of the stage and sound system, wilder fans and locals than I was expecting in Utah and most of all, for a spontaneous pickup game in the parking lot following the gig: The Hatters squared off against Collective Soul in a basketball game, only there was no hoop, the object was simply to hit the Ryder logo on the side of our truck with the ball. At the conclusion of the game, the Collective Soul guys climbed into their tour bus for the overnight ride east to Denver, while we piled into our van and equipment truck for a hard drive to an 11am load-in. Both La Luna in Portland and Club DV8 are gone. La Luna closed down in 1999 and Club DV8 burned down under uncertain circumstances in 2008. The Hatters Reunion Show: T-minus 40 days.
