This day in music: 15 January 1948: Born the oldest of three sons of Lacy and Marion Van Zant, in Jacksonville, Florida - Ronald Wayne (Ronnie) is noted for often saying as a child that he would be the most famous person from Jacksonville since his idol, NASCAR driver Le Roy Yarborough, and for often telling people that hed never live to see 30. Both were prophetic. As the founder, primary lyricist and lead vocalist of Lynyrd Skynyrd, I think its safe to say more people know of him than know Yarborough. He died in a plane crash four months before his 30th birthday. He was the brother of two surviving members of the band, and his cousin was a founder of the band .38 Special. Play Freebird! is a common joke among live bands to mock the drunks who shout requests from the crowd. Despite being the butt of such jokes, Van Zants lyrics and vocals in Freebird are etched in the musical DNA of a generation. Ronnie dedicated the song to fellow fallen Southern rocker, Duane Allman. youtu.be/np0solnL1XY
