This debate again: Of the four available qualities for download - TopicsExpress

This debate again: Of the four available qualities for download from Audible, which does the retail sample correspond to? Enhanced or 4? Answer: neither! At least for one of my own titles published last summer, it SOUNDS much more like quality 4 than the best, enhanced quality. But closer examination of the waveform shows that it is INTERMEDIATE. There is info in the 7.5 to 10 kHz band in the sample, that is missing in the quality 4; and the quality 4 has that strange, blocky, gappy looking spectrogram I posted earlier, but the retail sample does not. But at least in my own title there is a distinct tink! artifact introduced in one word in the sample, which I dont hear in the quality 4 download. So I dont really get what Audible is doing. The sample does NOT exactly correspond to any of the available downloads! If streaming is their concern, the sample file would have been even a bit SMALLER if it was exactly whats in quality 4! However something is going on common to both of them thats not in enhanced. For instance I see evidence of some highpass filtering (silly me, I left some significant subsound in there, I know better than that these days). I am not certain but there may be a little bit of dynamic compression too, not just data compression. Enhanced quality waveform appears much more faithful to my original, and so does the subjective quality.
