This devotional is late being posted today. Some days, ones old computer gets plumb crotchety, like an old, stubborn mule! But finally some tuning up got it going again. And here is my thought for today, continuing the series for the New Year on the Christian Walk--today, Walk Securely! Worth Considering…A Thought for Today Walk Securely “The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in His way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.” –Psalm 37:23 (ESV). I recall one of my beloved Bible teachers when I was in college telling his class that the Bible itself is one of the best sources for explaining and elucidating the Bible. I thought of this when I read the promise in Psalm 37:23 that the Lord himself directs our steps so that we can proceed securely in our lives, and that even if we fall (or stumble) we will not be completely overbalanced because the Lord holds onto us. Here are some more verses that promise we can walk securely in the Lord: “Who is the man who (reverently)fears (and worships) the Lord? Him will He instruct in the way he should choose” (Psalm 25:12, Amplified Bible). “He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure” (Psalm 40:2, ESV). “O that my ways may be steadfast in keeping Your statutes! Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all Your commandments” (Psalm 119:5-6, ESV). This is the assured pattern: We fix our thoughts and lives on the Lord and obeying and following Him. Then He shows us how to walk (conduct our lives) according to His plan and purposes for us. Yesterday was a day of much prayer, imploring the Lord’s blessings upon people with situations that genuinely need to feel that they are secure in the Lord’s will and held by His steadfast hand. At the same time, it was a day of praise and gratitude for answered prayers, petitions granted in even more unexpected ways, better and more bountifully than anticipated. If you consider death as being an answer to prayer, even that transition can be a blessing to relieve the Christian from illness and suffering, with the assurance that he has gone to heaven to receive his reward and that God’s comfort covers those who are left upon earth. If a long-time need is met, the steps to get to fulfillment of that need may have been at times tedious and trying, but the end result is triumphant. Prayer: Lord, I lift hands of gratitude to You for hearing and answering prayers and for showing the paths wherein I can walk securely. I know assuredly that “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105 NEV). Amen. -Ethelene Dyer Jones 01.06.2015
