This discussion about the womens role in the church is not new. Some academics among us have been pushing the liberation of women for a few decades. Those who took the permissive stance: Robert Rowland wrote, I Permit Not a Woman to Remain Shackled. Carroll Osburn has edited two volumes: Essays on Women in Earliest Christianity and wrote Women in the Church: Refocusing the Discussion in 1994. Others have opposed this permissive view. I spoke on this topic in 2008 at FHU and included some of the material in my earliest edition of the Evangelism Handbook in the 1990s. FHU had an entire discussion on the matter in a forum in 1990. Everett Fergusons excellent book, Women in the Church, came out in 2003. Charles Sattenfield put out a book on The Question of Women Praying in 1977. Neil Lightfoot wrote The Role of Women: NT Perspectives in 1978. Jimmy Jividen delivered a lecture in Abilene on the topic in 1991, and this is published in a small tract. Some other books, outside the church have also been valuable: Jack Cottrell, Gender Roles & the Bible (1994); and the Biblical Foundations for Manhood and Womanhood has many fine resources for further study.
