This documentary shows how musicians like Chico Science in Recife reacted against the influence of American rock eighties to create their own fusion, where rock and hip-hop were mixed with local traditional styles like maracatu. In São Paulo, examines how Racionais MCs created a new form of Brazilian hip-hop, which made heroes of predominantly poor black neighborhoods, the favelas. Meanwhile, producer Suba created a new style of electronic music and achieved international success through his work with Bebel Gilberto. In Rio de Janeiro, there were similar divisions: here, funk clubs were closed after the riots, and the music moved to the harsh slums now often a battleground between police and drug traffickers. The program examines how funk and hip-hop have developed in the slums, and how bands like AfroReggae tried to bring social change in the most lawless parts of the city. It also shows how samba continued to develop, in Rio, the development of a new segment, both through fusions of hip-hop as a return to the old fashioned style of samba. The program ends on a fourth city, Salvador, where the ax pop style dominates the carnival, but black musicians complain that they are being left out.
