This does not speak to me- this YELLS at me! Ive been thinking a lot lately about a specific incident when I was in 6th or 7th grade. Three girls, within the group of girls I hung around with, began to tease an older girl just outside of the lunch room. This girl was relatively new to school, very shy, and physically awkward in her particular state of puberty. I say these girls teased her, but really, they tormented her- called her an awful name which stuck for years, flung her up against a locker when she tried to stand up for herself. I did not join in on the teasing. Yet, over 25 years later, I feel terribly guilty because I did NOTHING. God forbid I stand up for this new girl for fear the teasing would then be turned on me. These particular girls teased everyone mercilessly- even their friends - and I was not about to invoke more. So I did NOTHING. As my own daughter is coming to the age I was at the time of this incident, I see those who were once sweet little girls and friends with everyone turning downright mean. I see who are the leaders, who are the followers, and who will be picked on mercilessly. It makes me sick. I only hope that I have taught my children to stand tall, be strong, fight back, and do SOMETHING.
