This early feminism came in response to one of the most notable historic events of the last millennium: the Black Death of 1348-51, which resulted in between one quarter and one third of the population losing their lives. Tine De Moor and Jan Luiten Van Zanden, two Dutch economic historians, argue that whilst the plague had devastating effects on many of those living at the time, it advanced the position of women in the longer term.
