This evening, I had opportunity to reflect on progress. I put a surcingle, bridle, and long lines on Paddy and took him out for about a 1.25 mile jaunt around the neighborhood. He was flatwalking jauntily at about 4 MPH - my usual speed for a brisk, purposeful walk. (Gena dont meander, Gena dont stroll!) Yes, I confess: I was admiring my good brown horse. His head was slightly up, nice softly arched neck... relaxed underneath the neck... topline looking strong... and hips working fluidly, swaying like a zaftig hula girl! And, oh, that beat! Mostly, he was in near-perfect four beat marching cadence with a nice deep nod... but when he was off, I took that as an opportunity to work on using hands or voice to help him get back in time to the music in my head (and out my mouth.. much to neighbors and their dogs dismay) I wondered.. what will happen if I jog a little... well... sorry dudes and dudettes.. no running walk to brag about.. he broke into a trot! But, it was a trot much like the trot *I* was doing (till the huffing, puffing, and creaking-of-knees took me back to that brisk 4 mph striding walk!) The best part ...well, sometimes, its neighbors who come running out.. or who pass by in vehicles, slowing way down with concern on their faces... till they see that it is NOT a loose horse... But today, the best part was the softness and sweetness oozing from my good brown Pad the Man... the soft muzzle, nuzzling velvetly on the back of my hand, and his big warm tongue offering puppy kisses along my arm. THIS is why I have the beasts, despite the work, despite the time, despite the money that I must devote to them: The simple joys, the delight, and the healing they bring to my soul.
