This evening I received an email from Mr. Win Winslow inquiring about the future if you all give me the opportunity to serve as your next Garland County Sheriff. See his question and my response below. I would sincerely appreciate your support by hitting the like button here on my Facebook page. Doing so will help spread the word on social media. Thank you all.... Win: As Sheriff, what kind of changes are you looking to make within the department itself? Do you take suggestions and ideas from people that are outside of the department itself? Mike: Win, Thank you for the questions. I really appreciate the opportunity to get my message out. This may be more than you had in mind! To your first question about changes in the department itself: 1) The Sheriffs Dept. needs to be proactive, focusing on community-oriented policing and improved problem solving. There is a lot that goes along with this. For example, developing new training standards to reflect this philosophy. 2) It is crucial that we have more patrol deputies on the streets. We must look within the department and re-prioritize our resources to achieve this. We have to look to the quorum court and convince them of the importance and severity of our needs. We need to look at other funding sources. Ive been approached by several community businesses about private funding for this need. 3) Transparency is vital and must be required in all areas of the Sheriffs Dept. This is a cornerstone for gaining and maintaining the publics support and trust. 4) We must maintain a strong command structure for all divisions to ensure proper supervision and accountability for all employees. 5) Creating a work environment that ensures proper training, evaluation and professional development for personnel is necessary for having an energized, competent, effective workforce. I want to see a larger emphasis placed on leadership training. One key belief that I hold is that every employee is a direct reflection of their leader (in this case the Sheriff). This is regardless of the position held within the Sheriffs Dept. I will conduct my business in a very professional manner and will expect the same from all others. To your second question: I would absolutely be willing to listen and will seek out the opinions and ideas of others. I dont have all the answers and community involvement is critical. I will always remain accessible to the community - whether it be at community events or a meeting at the Sheriffs office. It is vital to get input from employees but I realize that ultimately, I am responsible to the people of Garland County. While I havent specifically addressed the new Detention Center, make no mistake, the full responsibility for its effective operation falls squarely on the shoulders of the Sheriff. We must make sure that it is used to its full potential so that crime is reduced and Garland County is a safer place to live. This is a lot of information for two short questions and Ive got more ideas but these are some key points. I am passionate about Garland County and making it an even better place to live. I would appreciate your feedback and would also encourage you to take a look at my website mccormickforsheriff for more information. Have a nice evening! Best regards, Mike
