This evening I spent a couple of hours looking at faint galaxies - TopicsExpress

This evening I spent a couple of hours looking at faint galaxies in an area called the Virgo cluster of galaxies. The brightest member is the elliptical galaxy Messier 87. Within just a couple degrees in every direction are about 100 other galaxies that are within reach of my telescope. An area that was fascinating to me is called Markarians Chain. It is called a chain because, when viewed from Earth, the galaxies lie along a smoothly curved line. It was named after the Armenian astrophysicist, B. E. Markarian. Below is an image of this beautiful cluster of galaxies, and also the way this area looks on my iPad Air using Sky Safari 4 Pro. Please click on the image (not one I took) to see the full view.
