This evening, after a temp in the upper 90s and a heat index of above 100, three of my immediate neighbors mowed their lawns. We have not had a significant rain since late June. My neighbor to the left has auto sprinklers that come on every morning. My neighbor to the right mows so short the lawn turns brown within a day, and the sprinklers come on in the middle of a hot, blustery afternoon. I do not, and will never ever understand, how people with children are not concerned about the resources they are using up -- and the poison they are spewing into the air and ground. Does it not even compute that your kids will live in a different world because you insisted on a sterile space devoid of life? It is madness, complete psychological madness, to insist on an ordered, artifical landscape such as lawn. That we think we can dictate to this planet what it should be is no different than if our president suddenly enforced marshal law and began racial profiling and using hit squads. Yes, I said that. How we treat the landscape and each other are no different -- and it is clear by how we treat our wildlife and plants there is little hope for human rights.
