This evening we find ourselves in Columbia, capital of the state - TopicsExpress

This evening we find ourselves in Columbia, capital of the state of South Carolina. It is ironic that old US highway 1 runs in front of the Capital here and is known as the Robert E. Lee Memorial Highway, but due north approximately 780 miles it runs through my old home town of Crete Illinois and is known as the Lincoln Highway. In front of the South Carolina statehouse is a monument to the fallen Civil War sons of the South. The Confederate battle flag still flies at the monument, but not above the Capital. A 19th century plaque serves as a poignant reminder that it is not necessarily the cause that deserves respect, but the honest commitment of those who gave their last measure... ( sic) This monument perpetuates the memory of those who true to the instincts of their birth, faithful to the teachings of their fathers, constant in their love for the state, died In the performance of their duty: Who have glorified a fallen cause by the simple manhood of their lives, the patient endurance of suffering, and the heroism of death, and who, in the dark hours of imprisonment,in the hopelessness of the hospital, in the short, sharp agony of the field found support and consolation in the belief that at home they would not be forgotten.
