This evenings friendly match against Berwick Rangers under the Whittingehame Drive lights resulted in a 6-2 victory for the visitors but despite the scoreline it was a very worthwhile exercise. We looked bright early on but needlessly conceded the opening goal as the quarter hour mark approached, veteran of many a top flight campaign Craig Dargo snapping up the gift. A second goal followed shortly afterwards (didnt see it, dont know the scorer), then a flurry of four goals inside ten minutes, three of them for Berwick, gave rise to fears of a real hiding; Dargo netted with a clinical finish on 27 minutes, Hi Hi debutant James McPartlin pulled one back on the half hour after the keeper saved from Joe Murray and John Ferguson, then Dargo struck again within a minute or two. Centre forward Blair Henderson, transferred to Berwick last week from Bonnyrigg Rose (for whom hed scored a hat-trick against us in a 4-1 win in early October) was bundled to the ground inside the box on 37 minutes, getting to his feet to convert the penalty that made it 5-1. The managers half time team talk left the players in no doubts he wasnt satisfied with their efforts and they appeared to take the message on board, with a greatly improved second half showing. Michael Fairnie pulled a goal back from close range not long after the restart, and sub Mark Smith later looked set to further reduce the deficit after rounding the keeper, only to direct his shot narrowly past. John Ferguson looked to have a valid claim for a penalty ignored, and near the end Henderson added a sixth for the Borderers. Individual errors proved costly when it came to goals conceded but there were positives to be taken from the game - Chris Gordon completed the full 90 minutes after missing more than three months through injury, Joe Murray too got a run out after missing a lot of training in recent weeks and of course James McPartlin got his first game in Haddington colours under his belt. A young trialist showed up very well over the course of the last twenty five minutes or so. Our team tonight: Polowyj Berry Noble Gordon Motion Gray Fairnie Ponton Murray McPartlin Ferguson. Subs: Sinclair Wright Slight Smith Trialist.
