This evenings news featured information about a form of breast reconstruction being trialled at the Flinders Breast Reconstruction Unit that does not require implants or flap surgery. Breast reconstruction using the BRAVA device and fat transfer has been used in the United States for years, but has not been available in Australia to date. This breast reconstruction technique avoids lengthy surgeries and long scars by harvesting fat from the thighs or abdomen through liposuction, before injecting it into the breast. Before the fat transfer procedure the patient wears the BRAVA suction device for at least 10 hours a day for 10 days. A number of fat transfer procedures over weeks or months are necessary in order to transfer sufficient fat to make a medium to large breast, but these procedures are done as day case surgery and require less down time than existing breast reconstruction techniques. The BRAVA suction device works by expanding the breast tissue, creating an enhanced tissue scaffold for the transferred fat to survive within. For more information about the fat transfer breast reconstruction visit the website of the BRAVAs founder, Dr Roger Khouri: miamibreastcenter/reconstruction/after-mastectomy-miami Research also demonstrates that the BRAVA can be used to augment breast size in normal breasts without surgery if worn for at least 10 hours a day for at least 10 weeks. While the BRAVA is for sale on eBay it is not for international export, and cannot be purchased within Australia.
