This explains why the current proposal by government under the Aug 31 decision by NPCSC is unacceptable. It legitimizes the CE which is in real sense selected by a small circle. Even the current one is way better than the so called popular election. Why so? The NPCSC Aug 31 decision stipulates that all shall get over 50% support from the nomination committee and as an inevitable result, the pro-Beijing camp, which gets over 85% of the seats and the pro-Business camp, being part of the pro-bejing camp and having over 50% of the seats, will have complete control over who will become a CE candidate. Right now, we can at least see some real, though hopeless, competitions. In future, if the decision is implemented, we see only intriguing but fictitious competitions. Hong Kong people is stuck with whoever are hand-picked by pro-Beijing camp and will be forced to give mandate to such person, how ironic. Of course, if the nomination committee can truly represent the citizens, such nomination process is still worth a shot. But as CY Leung make it explicit, any one who earn less than 14,000 HKD per month, i.e. over 75% of HK population, does not deserve as much nomination / political power as those who earn more. And judging from the fact that I am not a constituent of any of the sub-sectors despite that I do earn slightly more than 14K, the real bar is even higher. What will be the future of Hong Kong in such electoral system? Business Favouritism, endless protests and potential riots, legislative deadlocks, low policy autonomy, increasing corruption. Basically a swamp. What if all pan democrats are swiped out from the scene? Sure. Without those opposition force and legislative deadlocks, things like repression of press freedom & freedom of speech, wasteful government spending (such as more unnecessary infrastructure), conflict of interests, corruption, business favoritism will only further deteriorate.
