This familys story puts a face to the Phoenix VA debacle. Family members and friends often need to advocate for their loved one that needs services. You have to remember that seeking help for mental health reasons is hard for any one of us and it seems to still be weighted down by stigma among vets and service members. Added to that is the very nature of the symptoms that need to be treated and how they will interfere with a persons ability to navigate all the hoops they have to jump through to get help. Depression, anxiety, hypervigilance are all common in vets returning from combat. So, they may become discouraged in attempting to get that appointment. The vet centers are a faster source of help than the VA (by far) for psychological treatment. The other resources I have previously listed and other non-profit organizations are great. cnn/video/data/2.0/video/us/2014/05/30/nr-bts-howard-jean-somers-veteran-son-daniel.cnn.html
