This former oyster barge is the last of its kind. Located at the Quinnipiac River Marina in Fair Haven, it is a remnant of a once-vibrant floating oyster market that flourished in 19th century New York City. Land fill has encased the boat creating a permanent berth, but its basic form and historic detailing are still intact. It was recently determined eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places by the State Historic Preservation Office; with listing it could qualify for historic rehabilitation tax credits. The barge is in disrepair and suffered damage during Hurricane Sandy. Call Lisa Fitch, Quinnipiac River Marina at 203-777-3625 to learn more about the efforts underway to save this piece of history and make sure to grab the New Haven Register on Sunday to read an article that will be published about it.
