This from the Asheville Citizen-Times on what makes Asheville "funky" We talked to street musicians, Hula-Hoopers, Kava-Kava aficionados, a juggler, a downtown resident and a dude playing a didgeridoo, among others. “The circus is in town every day, and it’s a good thing,” said Martin Grove, an Atlanta transplant who lives downtown. “It’s the river — it runs from south to north,” street musician Rusty James said, explaining that the French Broad is one of just a few rivers worldwide that do that. His band mate, didgeridoo and steel drum player Peter Levitov, attributed the funkiness to “all the crystals under the mountains.” A guy named “Spoons,” sporting overalls with no shirt and an unplanned rear door opening, played some fine spoons but didn’t add much more to the discussion, verbally at least. Ivy Hyde, Hula Hoopster extraordinaire, put it best, “The funkiness drives the funkiness.” I can’t argue with that.
