This gelding was normal just 12 hours earlier at feeding time. The next morning the horse was found standing in the pasture and reluctant to move. When asked to walk forward, this horse preferred to walk backwards. The horse refused to turn to the right, but would circle to the left on a line. His general appearance was that of a sedated horse as seen in the pictures. He became very aggressive and dangerous to handle. The horse would strike, rear, kick out, and bite when approached. This horse was known to be very easy to handle prior to this condition. It is currently in the middle of winter. The owner is expecting an answer and a treatment plan. What questions would you ask the owner to come to a diagnosis? What is the next step? Do you already know the cause of these symptoms? If you ask the right questions, you can make a reasonable diagnosis.
