This gives a clear explanation of how the Modified Mercalli (MM) scale relates to the shaking intensity that is felt (and why it is different to earthquake magnitude). Damage occurs above intensity MM 6 and structural damage above MM 8. The February 2011 Christchurch earthquake was a magnitude 6.3, but an MM 9 due to the epicenter location and shallow depth (the focus). Even though the recent Seddon earthquake which caused damage in Wellington was a magnitude 6.5, it was only an MM 7 in Wellington. This is because of the distance from the epicentre.
