This goes out to Lance Voels whom had a girlfriend back home waiting for him so patiently in 1987 before we left from Okinawa. She was in the hospital having complications with the birth of their child and though the Red Cross contacted him about the emerging issue he was not able to be sent home till the last minute. It drove him nuts that he could not be there to support his fiancé in her time of need as he was not married to her but the baby was theirs. I was a shoulder during his time of need and as his heart was breaking just to know that he was not being allowed to go home. That in itself was a battle and I was proud that I was there for the support of him till the Navy decided to allow him to get home to be there if either was to die as was the case the mother upon giving birth or the baby at birth. Lance you were a good friend and I am proud to have served with you and was there just to be a shoulder and an ear for your pain and hurt in your time of need.
