This got me crying. 3 main thoughts are jostling in my head. 1. The world is so rich with diversity and better for it. I can understand the evolutionary wiring that pulls people towards wanting homogeny instead of diversity. What I cant get my head around is - how long will it take for the impact of white imperialism will wear off and we stop thinking of white as the standard of beauty. 2. The power of role models for children has never been more evident to me. 3. Back to evolution again - I get how womens obsession with beauty has evolutionary origins but it seems so archaic to define our self worth by our wrappings. I have never met a woman (self included) who doesnt think about her desirability and wish to be more lovely on some level. Wouldnt that be truly freeing? After we achieve a million years of equality, will we have bred some of that out? Anyway - watch the speech. It is very touching. I am off to primp myself for work. (oh the irony)
