This group has already started some amazing things! A radio station, a documentary in the works, a community calendar, house shows! Kudos to the folks who are getting their shit together, and heres to a sense of community! On the back of this, heres something I am working on. Anyone heard of the Hardcore Help Foundation or Positive Force DC? Basically all the good shit that hardcore teaches us about making the world a better place made into an organisation that actually turns the words into actions and supports the scene along the way. Benefit shows combined with volunteering to support projects that feed the homeless, or movie screenings to raise awareness about the situation of asylum seekers, etc. Basically trying to create a culture of giving and doing over complaining and apathy. Ultimately giving kids opportunities to do something real with their lives. Inspired by so many people in this fine city, I want to make this a staple in Melbourne. So I started the BEARBRASS Collective. So far on the cards, we are finalising a benefit compilation with our friends from the north in Deaths Grip to support AIME and The Wilderness Society, as well as working on merch supply that doesnt involve sweatshops, writing zines, building a distro and archive for inspiring hardcore material, creating a national youtube channel that supports bands with a message, organising volunteering with Lentil as Anything, Abbotsford, film screenings, and more. This is just the beginning! Have a read of a time when I chucked some thoughts onto paper in the Bearbrass Manifesto zine, and Ill be around at the Outright/CBK kid shows if you wanna rap.
