This guy is totally smoking crack, he is completely out of touch with the rules and regulations imposed on trucking. Where did he get his facts? Some of the out of touch statements: Shippers would be strictly liable for any road accidents involving the trucks that they engage to ship their goods, regardless of culpability. So he means the trucker should be held at fault even if the accident was caused by the other motorist? After several recent trips along America’s interstate highways, I sensed that the size and weight of tractor-trailers, tanker trucks and automobile transporters are getting longer, wider and heavier. Since when? Sizes are standardized to fit the roads, they have not changed in decades. ignore mandatory stops at weigh stations when they cross a state line (something I have often witnessed) Ever hear of Pre-Pass rolling scales in the highway, that instruct trucks to by-pass open scales? Ignore an open scale, and the trucker will quickly have a cop pull them over. Truck safety standards have been consistently relaxed over the years. The well-being of automobile drivers and passengers is not part of the Federal Highway Administration’s portfolio. Concern for it at the agency is, at best, a low priority. Ahh WRONG! I was surprised to learn from the Size Regulations that the prevailing policy is “no limits.” If a state wants to allow wide-body trucks that take up most of the highway space, the feds allow it. More perverse, federal length limits for trucks are minimums, not maximums. Don’t be surprised if you soon see the road equivalent of a marine supertanker hurtling down Interstate 95 at speeds far exceeding the speed limit. How many times have you seen a law enforcement vehicle pull over a tractor-trailer for speeding? Again WRONG, a semi cannot exceed 40 ton, unless permited, the majority of them have speed regulators on them. Cops pull trucks over all the time, they prefer to, because the fines are larger.
