This happened a year ago today: Tonight my wifes a hero, because things couldve gone completely wrong, but they didnt because of her. My wife was driving my daughter to her ballet class tonight for pictures and their last recital rehearsal, just as the sky opened up and dumped a raging river of rain onto the road. She tried to pull down a side street as a set of two foot waves moved toward them, but the car stalled in the middle of the turn where the water was the deepest. As the car bobbed up and down, my wife pulled our daughter from her seat and waded through water up to her waist while the rain poured down on them. Hugh trucks blew by, and she shielded our daughter from the thick sheets of dirty rain water kicked up by their knobby tires. On the sidewalk under the canopy of a tree, my daughter trembled in my wifes arms. As freaked out as my wife must have felt on the inside, she was a rock and held it all together for the both of them. By the time I was able to get them home and go back and fetch the car, the water had disappeared and the sun was shining. The car just sat there in the middle of a turn with its windshield wipers wiping away the reflection of a rainbow in the sky. Later my wife sobbed in my arms, which made her no less of a hero to me. Because even superheroes need the warm embrace of a loving hug, and a good cry every once in a while.
