This happened to me about 2 weeks ago... exactly as described below.. I told them I didnt trust someone calling me about a computer problem. Microsoft Technician imposter attempted.. Posted by Jack Wilborn on March 7, 2014 at 7:58am in ACTION ALERTS Back to ACTION ALERTS Discussions . Hello, yesterday I received a phone call from a person claiming to be from Microsoft Technical services and claimed my machine had been reported by a windows server that I had downloaded a piece of malware. The person claimed that they knew my Windows CLSID and that uniquely identified me and that they were calling to help me correct the problem. Having a strong background in IT, I was suspicious that Microsoft would call me for any reason, except if I owed them money. I followed their advice, but when I asked how do I know you are really from Microsoft, they gave me something about the CLSID being unique and identified me with my phone number. I asked him what version of Windows I was running, and he finally came back with 7, and I run Linux (Debian flavor) with my wifes Vista machine being the closest, also I run Windows 8.1, only when necessary, but very rarely. Knowing the CLSID was not unique, I let them go for a while. After giving me a supervisor who took me to a cmd window and had me enter ASSOC, I believe is an association list wanted to read my number back to me. When I asked does this number [CLSID] get transmitted over the Internet and he answered no, I knew it was a problem. Finally I advised him that I knew of this scam, after a few seconds he said Ive crashed your computer and hung up. The persons had a rather heavy Eastern Indian accent and could only state that my CLSID was the identifier. They had the wrong machine/software type and no way to associate that ID with my phone number. Microsoft would never call you about malware, as there are millions of copies of their OS and could not call everybody. Just be aware of this scam, Im not sure where it leads, but to no good. You can Google CLSID and scanning will come up with some reference to the scam, if you wish to know more.
