This has been an amazing year, theatrically speaking. I worked with the best team in BareTruth/Little Stitches to tackle the issue of FGM; had a short play in Greenwich Theatre directed by the wonderful Pamela Schermann; understood the power of Boal technique to understand and change the world surrounding us with Vultures, met the people at Luna Playback London and had a couple of plays re-visited in Spain thanks to the tirelessly working Los Sueños de Fausto. More than a playwright can dream of. I feel blessed. But theres one little short play that moved me very deeply. Its just a monologue I wrote a year ago about all those who dissappeared during the dictatorship in Spain and that are still buried in mass graves. The Spanish authorities dont think this is a national problem, and conviniently ignore an issue of this magnitude for political reasons. This play is part of a bigger, nearly impossible project that tries to understand the recent Spanish history through theatre called Teatro por la Memoria. (Theatre for Memory). It was staged only once, in a small theatre in Madrid and I couldnt even attend it - so I had to watch it on YouTube. The power of the acting and the directing blew me away. I understood that theatre cant be only a product of hours of writing and re-writing. It needs to be alive, and it needs of the energy of those who see beyond the vision of a single person. This is what Id like to share with you from this fantastic and strange year. --- Este ha sido un año fantástico en términos teatrales. He trabajado con el mejor equipo en BareTruth/Little Stitches para erradicar la ablación del clítoris a través del teatro. Pamela Schermann dirigió una obra mía en el teatro Greenwich; entendí el poder del Teatro del Oprimido para cambiar el mundo que nos rodea gracias a Vultures, me encontré con Luna Playback (o el reencuentro con el amor) y un par de obras mías pervivieron en Madrid gracias a la insistencia y el trabajo duro de Los Sueños de Fausto, y mi hermano Miguel. Más de lo que un escritor de teatro podría imaginar. Me siento increíblemente afortunado. Pero hay una pequeña obra que quiero destacar, porque me conmovió profundamente. Es solo un monólogo que escribí hace un año sobre aquellos que desaparecieron durante la Guerra Civil y el Franquismo y cuyos restos aún reposan en cunetas y fosas comunes. Los sucesivos gobiernos de España siguen negando que exista un problema de Memoria Histórica en este país y por tanto creen que ni las recomendaciones de la ONU, ni la visita del Relator Especial, ni nadie, harán que cambie la política hacia la misma. Esta pequeña obra es parte de un proyecto llamado Teatro por la Memoria que quiere entender la memoria de nuestro país a través del teatro. Solo se representó una vez, en un pequeño teatro en Madrid y ni siquiera pude asistir al estreno, por encontrarme lejos de mi tierra. Tuve que verlo por internet. La fuerza del actor y la dirección me dejaron maravillado. Entendí que el teatro no puede ser tan solo el producto de horas de investigación y escritorio. Necesita estar vivo, y necesita de aquella gente que ve más allá de la visión del individuo.
