This has been the most marvelous birthday! I thought this year in Bali, Id have a nice quiet birthday by myself after a whirlwind trip of workshops and happy social engagements in Singapore and doing all kinds of lovely things like a spa day and visiting temples, volcanos and hot springs with my guest Kavita. But what a surprise! There was more. I had two parties in one day at beautiful restaurants, planned for me by loving friends from many countries, with candles to blow out each time, presents, flowers, a band playing Happy Birthday, everyone in the restaurant singing and clapping, so much love and laughter and sweet sharing. And incredible food, including a jicama salad with sweet potato and mango, roast duck (a specialty in Bali) and more. The birthday cake at dinner was a klappertaart, a scrumptious Indonesian-Dutch layered custard pie, the recipe originating in Sulawesi, made from fresh young coconut, rum, vanilla... (has its own Wikipedia page) that my hosts brought from Sanur. It had those birthday candles that keep relighting so I got to make several wishes-prayers-blessings-Light attunements for me and all present and this beautiful world. Thank you Michael, Fiona Tarini Wayland, Susi Budiman, Saeng-Fah Graham and friends, Nicole, Joanna Hsuan Liang L and Kavita Devi and all who sent me such warm wishes and blessings. My Balinese landord, Made and his family gave me lovely flowers after having also invited me this week as a guest to the ceremony for their 3-month-old daughter (children here get many ceremonies!!!) and sending me home with lots of babi guling (roast suckling pig is traditionally made for this ceremony) and chicken satay. And then I spent half the night working it all off answering Facebook, e-mail, and Skype birthday wishes. I am astounded, warmed, grateful, happy, delighted.
