This has gone viral and has made many animal lovers sad. I want a small dog. But I work a lot of hours so I hesitate to get a pet that will likely spend many hours at home alone. I worry about the length of time and its needing to go to the bathroom. And I worried about its feelings and behavior while being left alone. Will it bark and disturb the neighbors? Or will that pet do as this dog did.......... With this I remember my mothers dog Fred, whos photo I had posted a couple weeks back. When my mother had the massive stroke in 2001 that led to her decline and eventual death she spent the first several months in a hospital or nursing home and her companion Fred died during those few months. His health and behavior began to decline rapidly when my mother was not around to take care of him. I knew way back then that the dogs know and they do experience separation anxiety. I suspected this as a child over 40 years ago when we had dogs and every time we left home for work and school the dogs would run and chase after our car for a couple blocks. That was a time when the world was a lot different and it was ok to leave your pets outside unleashed at home and you returned home to find them safe (and waiting for you) Today you cant leave your pets out like we did when I was a child. There are laws and safety issues to consider. So you may leave them inside the home while you go to work. And that doesnt sound much better especially when you see this video. I had a cat for 5 years and things went ok for most of that time. Its when Sterling grew up that things got a little hairy (and I dont mean shedding). And I understand that cats mostly take care of themselves and I understand if any pet had a companion pet in the household that may help both animals when left alone all day. But I am limited in space and finances to handle more than one small pet. I may even have landlord issues because I do anyway and adding a pet into that drama might not be a good idea. I still want a dog. But do I want to put any pet through something like this?
