This high concentration is not surprising, says Oreshkin, as this sample taken by Greenpeace is representative of excessive chrome concentration in the pre-treatment tailings pond which holds all process tailings as well rainwater and most of the groundwater seeping from the plant’s old and now disused tailings dam. “After going through the neutralisation facility, and after treatment, the plant’s controlled water discharge contains no chromium, which is verified by the results released by the environmental protection prosecution service,” Oreshkin told Metal-Pages.
