This history of MySQL written by Stewart Smith is very interesting. I started with MySQL in 2005 when the 5.0 release was not yet stable. It was a good time to start hacking on MySQL because there were a lot of things to fix. I spent a lot of time debugging and improving replication and InnoDB. I usually enjoyed working on InnoDB. The code is well designed, documented and implemented. The InnoDB team was very responsive. Replication, well, all I will say is that it has been rewarding to work on it, but I am unlikely to go near that code again.
