This honestly never occurred to me as being a form of abuse. My Mom told me that my Dad gave her a weekly allowance when they were in the first years of their marriage, $15 per week. In the mid 1950s, this was enough to pay for groceries, cigarettes and a fifth of whiskey. I am not sure how long that arrangement continued. I do remember my Mom saying that Dad kept the check book and that she had no idea how much money they had. I cannot imagine having to live like that!
