This honestly surprised me. I always viewed Creationism as a fringe belief adhered to by a relatively small number of more extreme Christians. It doesnt surprise me that people believe in god. I may have trouble with it (though Im not really a hardcore atheist either), but I get why other people do. What I do not understand is why belief in the creation story in the book of Genesis has become so inseparable from a belief in god. I mean, people didnt stop believing in a god when they discovered that god didnt cause lightning. People didnt stop believing in god when they discovered that the universe didnt revolve around the earth. So why would accepting evolution stop people from believing in god? It wont. People will just do what theyve always done: Rationalize the new knowledge into their older religious beliefs. The Vatican has already done this with their concept of theistic evolution in which they accept the theory of evolution but believe that evolution is guided by god. But apparently, for about 46% of Americans, even that idea is just too radical and blasphemous. gallup/poll/155003/hold-creationist-view-human-origins.aspx
