This in from the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence: Dear Rosemary: The corporate gun lobby went all the way to the Supreme Court to fight for domestic abusers. If they had had their way, countless convicted domestic offenders would be allowed to buy and own guns…and countless victims of domestic abuse would have been killed as a result. We stopped them. By “we,” I mean all of us. Including you. With your help, we enlisted friends in the gun violence prevention community, partners in law enforcement, children’s advocates, and law firms to submit powerful amicus briefs in the Supreme Court case, United States v. Castleman. The voice of domestic violence prevention advocates prevailed. On Wednesday, every single Justice rejected the gun lobby’s call to blast a gaping hole in the federal gun prohibition for domestic offenders. As a result of the sweeping 9-0 decision from the Supreme Court, if you’re convicted of a domestic violence assault or battery crime, you can’t get a gun. It’s that’s simple. The late Senator Paul Wellstone once said, “often, the only difference between a battered woman and a dead woman is the presence of a gun.” Thanks to you, American women and families are a lot safer now. With gratitude, Jonathan E. Lowy Director, Legal Action Project Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence Please join the campaign. To do so, write to: [email protected] Thanks again to Rep. Helene Morena for her work on these issues.
